Holly on Hollywood – A Dog’s Journey

“A Dog’s Journey”
by Holly McClure

A Dog’s Journey is a sequel to A Dog’s Purpose following the adorable dog Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad), who loves his master Ethan (Dennis Quaid) and is devoted to Ethan’s granddaughter, CJ (Kathryn Prescott).  After the death of her husband (Hannah’s son) in a car crash, Gloria takes CJ away from her grandparents so Ethan encourages his beloved dying Bailey to return to find CJ and protect her. Bailey is reborn as a playful beagle named Molly, a lazy mastiff named Big Dog, and a mean little Yorkie named Max, all of whom go to dog heaven at various points. Marg Helgenberger also stars.

The PG rating is for a few heartbreak scenes, a parent’s verbal and substance abuse, a neglectful alcoholic mother, an abusive boyfriend who crashes into his ex-girlfriend on purpose, a verbally demeaning boyfriend, an agnostic belief system, reincarnation and the death of dogs who die due to sickness, old age, and accidents. The main message is about the unconditional love humans share with their pets and is told through Bailey’s childlike eyes which makes some scenes humorous but it’s still filled with heartbreak and the sadness of losing a pet. This is a movie that affirms the relationship between humans and dogs. Kids will walk away remembering the cute dogs more than the death and misery but it’s the grown-ups who might need some healing afterward. In fact, for those of you who find comfort in “rescue dogs”, this movie will definitely emotionally affect you.
