“Harriet”
by Holly McClure

“Harriet” is a powerful story based on the life of freedom fighter/abolitionist Harriet Tubman (Cynthia Erivo), made famous for her work to save slaves using the Underground Railroad. The story begins with a younger Harriet who was traumatized seeing her sisters sold and taken away. As Harriet’s master and his family increased their abusive behavior, Harriet decided to escape, making the 100-mile long and treacherous journey from Maryland to Philadelphia, to find freedom. Although Harriet enjoyed her new life, she missed her family and friends and wanted them to also be free. Over the next 10 years Harriet made 19 trips rescuing hundreds more and earning the title of “Moses” who freed the slaves and made the Underground Railroad famous.

The PG-13 rating is for mature pre-teens to adults because of scenes of slaves being mistreated, abused and beaten, derogatory language that includes racial epithets, and intense chase scenes. Erivo commands the screen as the heroic Tubman and delivers a captivating and memorable role that will inspire mature audiences, especially women. For young people who are unaware of what slavery was or the conditions, slaves endured, this is a profound insight into that part of American history. I enjoyed the beautifully moving orchestral score, the dramatic true story and seeing a woman as an action-hero!  But I mostly appreciated the spiritual aspect, showing Harriet’s faith and how she saw visions from God that told her which way she should travel, warning her when her life was in danger. “Harriet” is a powerful, inspiring story about a real heroine who changed history in the name of freedom! All teenagers and adults should see this life-changing movie!
