Hearing From God in a Noisy World

How many text messages do you send each day?
How many times do you check Facebook, Twitter, or another social media outlet each day?
According to Joseph McCormack, author of “BRIEF: Making a Bigger Impact by Saying Less,” the average professional receives 304 emails every week, checks her Smartphone 150 times per a day, and spends 28 hours each week reading and responding to emails.
Unless you sit completely alone in a room all day and night with zero distractions, someone, or something—coworkers, your children, your spouse, friends, family, the television, the radio, the Internet, etc.—are communicating with you.
Couple all of that with the stresses and worries of life and you could easily have hundreds of things—hundreds of “voices”—competing for your attention.
So how can you hear God’s voice in such a noisy world?
How can you truly know you’re hearing His voice and not someone else’s…
The traditions of men have taught us that we have to go through someone to talk to God or hear from Him.
But that’s not true.
You have a direct line to God.
And He wants to help you.
He wants you to walk in His power. He wants to turn negative situations in your life around. He wants to equip you to accomplish the things He’s called you to do. He wants to lead you by His Spirit.
But you HAVE to know His voice.
The Bible doesn’t tell you where to live, who to marry, or what occupation you should have. It doesn’t tell you whether or not you should buy or sell a house or buy or sell your stocks, or anything like that.
But to be successful in life, you have to know those things.
The good news is that you don’t have to try to figure things out on your own.
You have access to some amazing help.
God wants to help prepare you for everything you will need in life, in business, and in your relationships. He’s there to give you new ideas and plans that will take you to incredible places you’ve never been before, places that aren’t familiar and may seem downright ridiculous to you, but not to Him.
1 Corinthians 2:9-10 says, “However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’—the things God has prepared for those who love him—these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”
So, how can you hear God’s Voice for yourself?
- Spend time in God’s presence.
When you wake up in the morning it’s really easy to get going about your day—getting on Facebook right off the bat, listening to voicemails, checking emails, watching the news, etc.—but you need to seek God first, before your feet even hit the floor to get out of bed.
- Listen to spiritual leaders.
Leaders are a voice for you. They are an example to you. They are Jesus’ gift to you. Heed their voice.
It’s so important for you to hear and heed the voice of the Lord.
These are just two of the ways you can hear Him.

Through their own life experiences, the Keesees have found the principles from God’s Word to be powerful and effective. At one point, Drenda was a young, suicidal feminist with no hope of ever being “good enough” for her own standards of perfection. She never wanted the “inconvenience” of a husband or children, and she was on her own path to success. But the stress of trying to achieve perfection and perform for love left her broken and used. She had success, but it was nothing compared to the pain and loneliness it had also brought.
That’s when God got a hold of her heart. It was there—at her lowest point—that she found the One who accepted and loved her, faults and all. Since that transformation, Drenda has had a passion to reach women who find themselves where she once was.
She married Gary after attending college, and there she found herself in a personal boot camp of sorts. She says, “I cried and told God, ‘I can do anything but be a wife and mother.’” She committed to learning how to do it God’s way. Through the many years of raising their children and struggling to make ends meet, Drenda learned from their mistakes. “I didn’t know how to be a wife and mother, but God saved our marriage, taught us how to parent our children for success, showed us how to have financial success, and then irony of all ironies, He called us to ministry.” It’s truly because of these life experiences that Drenda can now share so many insightful principles for people who are now going through the same struggles.
