For All the Mama Warriors
by Hannah Keeley
I have to admit it. One of my favorite movies is “Nacho Libre.” In fact, whenever I have self-confidence issues about wearing my leggings, I just think about Nacho and his “stretchy pants” and all is right with my world. But when I was watching it the other day, his words hit me deep in my spirit. Yes, I’m talking about Nacho Libre, not some deep, intellectual movie. See, God knows me so well. He knows how I work and how I listen. And the Holy Spirit is speaking my language when He teaches me through comedies and Disney movies. That’s my jam. God knows that, and He’s cool with it.
There is one part in the movie when…
Nacho is completely discouraged with how his life is turning out. He lays it all out before God and says, “Precious Father, why did you give me this desire to wrestle, and then make me such a stinky warrior?’ My heart did a flip-flop as I heard myself say almost those same words so many times before:
“Precious Father, why did you give me this desire for children, and then make me such a stinky mommy?”
It’s true. When we first start out on the path of motherhood, we have Instagram dreams of perfect nurseries, sweet moments, and cute little baby toes. Then reality hits and it doesn’t come with a filter of any sort. Long nights and lost tempers. Stretch marks and diaper rash. Unpaid bills and unmade beds. Then comes the stretchy pants because we can’t fit into anything else.
We want so badly to be good mommies. We dreamed of it, believed for it, but nothing seems to be going according to plan.
That’s when you need to make a new plan.
God will never give you the desire without giving you a way to fulfill it. He is the author and the finisher of our faith. If He gave you the dream. He’ll give you a way to make that dream come true. He is faithful but never promises to do things according to your plan. The reality is that He is dreaming up a bigger plan than you can imagine right now.
Psalm 37:4 tells us to “take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” What a wonderful promise! So things may not have worked out the way you imagined they would. It’s time to imagine something greater! Nacho dreamed of getting all the glory of being a professional wrestler–the parties, the ladies, the fancy clothes! Sometimes I feel like Nacho. I have huge dreams, but the reality is a stark contrast. At one point in the movie, he speaks sarcastically about his life and says, “My life is good! Really good! I get to wake up every morning, at 5 AM, and make some soup! It’s the best. I love it.” (Yeah, sounds kind of like a mom’s life to me.)
But then he got his focus. He wasn’t just wrestling for the fame. He was wrestling for a greater purpose, for the orphans. And that is when his whole life turned around. Sure, he was a stinky warrior. That was because he was wrestling for the wrong purpose! I know it’s just a silly movie, but please hear me out. Nothing will change in your satisfaction level if you don’t get your focus right. If you’re doing things for the perceived reality of being a mom, you’re going to keep bumping your head up against one disappointment after another. But if you are doing things for the glory of God, He is going to lift you up to levels you could have never imagined!
The truth is, we’re all stinky warriors…when we try to do it on our own. God wants to give you the desires of your heart. He wants to make you a mighty warrior, but you’ve got to abide by that first part of the verse. Delight yourself in the Lord! When God is first and your life is grounded in His Word, then His strength becomes your strength. His authority becomes your authority. You can get your stinky self inside that ring every morning because you know that He goes with you.
If you’re going at this whole motherhood thing on your own, then, yes, you will be disappointed. Life will seem like one soup pot after another. But when you put God first in your life, the blessings never stop. God did not give you this desire to be a mom just so you would be spending your life disappointed in your abilities. He gave you this desire so He could fulfill it. Trust Him and get back in the ring!
Did this bless you? I sure hope so! If it did, please keep the blessing going by sharing with your friends or posting on Facebook. You have no idea who may be feeling like a “stinky mommy” today!
Hannah Keeley was once in overwhelmed mom living in a cluttered house, deep in debt, out of shape, and barely hanging on. But one day, after finding herself sobbing uncontrollably into a pile of clean laundry, she realized God has bigger and better plans for her (just like He does for each one of His children). Beginning that day, she began making changes in her life that took her from overwhelmed to overjoyed. Today, she’s helping moms do the same. Hannah, her husband, Blair, and their seven children live in Richmond, Virginia, and are having the time of their lives!
