“Holly on Hollywood”
by Holly McClure
“Captive” is based on the thrilling true story about Ashley Smith (Kate Mara) and convicted criminal Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo). On March 11, 2005, Brian murdered a judge presiding over his rape trial, then escaped from the Atlanta courthouse and continued his murder spree. That night, Brian kidnapped Ashley in her parking lot and held her captive in her apartment. During the intense night and into the morning, Brian asked Ashley to pass the time by reading from Rick Warren’s book, “The Purpose Driven Life”. The passages and discussions about God and forgiveness forever changed both their lives.
The PG-13 rating is for intense drama and adult issues but no graphic violence or language. Lengthy scenes of dialogue with no action, brief scenes of drug use, some gun violence and discussions about Ashley being an unfit drug-addict mother, make “Captive” more appropriate for mature teens to adults who can understand and appreciate the plot.
This true story made international headlines so the ending is not a surprise. But even though I knew the ending, I was still swept up in this gripping story. This is not a “Christian” movie but it IS a powerful true story, of redemption, forgiveness and second-chances, that will resonate with all audiences.
