Emotions and Essential Oils
by Terri Bonin
Let’s talk about how essential oils affect our emotions. Have you ever noticed that when you smell a certain scent, it seems to transport you back in time? Of course, you have! Broccoli and chicken casserole, apple pie, and breakfast biscuits take me back to the joys of my childhood. Shutran essential oil takes me to Cabo—in the MOST fun way possible. Inner Child oil reminds me of my husband because he wears it alllll the time. I LOVE it! And it happens to all of us for good reason.
So, you might be asking yourself, “Terri, really how does it work?” Well, I’m going to get a little science-y with you for a second, so sit with me and I’ll tie it all together.
One of the primary ways essential oils work is…
…that, because the molecules of Essential Oils are small enough to circulate through human tissue, they are able to bring nutrients to cells and carry waste out from cells. They also can transport electrons and oxygen into human tissue. Essential oils carry coded information that can be translated by cellular DNA, meaning they could have a direct therapeutic impact on people physically, mentally, and emotionally. There are upwards of thousands of different compounds found in EO molecules. Each of these molecules has an affinity for certain cells of the human body.
They carry information that is pertinent only to the cells with the receptor sites able to accept that specific ligand or molecule. In laymen’s terms—imagine essential oils like a puzzle piece. They will ONLY go to and affect the cell with a receptor site that is a perfect match for that puzzle piece. Hence, some oil molecules gravitate to muscle tissue, some to nerves, other to the digestive system, hormones, etc., each administering benefits, including the removal of toxins and the opening of emotionally stored memory in the DNA.
Meaning, essential oils actually have the ability to release memories stored at the cellular level in your body…. CRAZY.
Not only can oils help release cellular memories stored anywhere in the body, depending on the oils applied, they also directly stimulate the limbic system or emotional brain, which is in the center of our heads.
Our eyes, ears, tongue, and sense of touch are all wired so that their messages pass to the brain via the reasoning cortex first. The nose, however, is wired differently. It connects directly with the limbic brain such that one’s response to an aroma is going to be emotional before it can be rational. So, why is this important? Fear and trauma can produce unconscious emotional responses that—unless released and dealt with—will not only hamper our ability to live and enjoy life but can also limit the ability of some bodily systems to function properly, particularly the immune system. This can result in unexplained pain and illness as well as depression and other psychological issues.
BUT there is HOPE! Because inhaled oils directly affect the emotional seat in our brains where traumatic memories are often stored and because oils can release cellular memories stored anywhere in the body, they can be of great value in helping us clear ourselves from the unconscious, hidden emotional patterns that can control our lives and hold us back from the full manifestation of our potential. Basically, essential oils can help a deep-seated emotion or trauma to be brought to the surface SO THAT you can be made aware of that issue and deal with it accordingly. CRAZY right?!
So, what are some essential oils we can use to help release those potentially stored emotions?
Let’s start with one of my favorite oils: Valor.
Valor
This blend was formulated to balance energies and instill courage, confidence, and self-esteem. It helps the body self-correct its balance and alignment. Valor was actually used in the Roman bathhouses by soldiers before they went off to battle—so use generously and feel like a freaking warrior.
Frankincense
The next oil we have is Frankincense. Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man, frank was valued more than gold during ancient times. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, Eber Papyrus—dating from the 16th century BC—an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes. Now, while the history of frank is SUPER interesting, what’s even more so interesting is its effect on our bodies and emotions. It has, as medical properties, antitumoral, immune-stimulant, antidepressant, and muscle relaxing capabilities. It also has anti-anxiety effects as well when applied to the skin. Frank is a part of the Valor blend, which is why Valor helps to decrease anxiety and increase courage and confidence.
Peace and Calming
Another one of my favorite oils, Peace and Calming, is special to me because it brings to mind the faces of my children. P&C blend promotes relaxation and a deep sense of peace and emotional well-being, helping to dampen tensions and uplift spirits. It reduces depression, anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Ways to use this is by diffusing at the end of a stressful day—I’ve literally had stress headaches disappear within 20 minutes of diffusing this after a workday—or messaging on the bottoms of the feet to promote a good nights rest. It also works well to calm children. Win-win-WIN!
Stress Away
Next on our list of emotionally supportive oils is Stress Away! This is a gentle, fragrant blend that brings feelings of peace and tranquility to both children and adults. It helps to relieve daily stress and nervous tension. It helps with normal, everyday stress, improves mental response, restores equilibrium, promotes relaxation, and lowers hypertension. This is another one of my favorites when it comes to helping lower stress and promote a tensionless day. Plant juice is the BEST, am I right?!
Lavender
Last, but certainly not least on our list, is Lavender. Lavender is probably the single most used oil in my home. It has SO MANY amazing properties for the WHOLE body. Emotionally, Lavender is calming, relaxing, and balancing. It’s perfect for a great night’s sleep, or for lessening nerves before a big date. The University of Miami researches found that Lavender Oil increases the brainwaves responsible for relaxation, suggesting higher relaxation than most other fragrances. So SO cool!
