E = mc 2
by Meggan Larson
In this case E simply means “energizing” but it feels like it’s rocket science sometimes doesn’t it? If you’re following the Trim Healthy Mama eating plan then you may be like most newbies and be terrified of the dreaded E meal! When I started THM I just ate S meals for quite a while and I lost a lot of weight quickly BUT the weight loss didn’t stick. One of the reasons you may feel so successful only sticking to S meals (the fatty yummy give me some more BUTTAH meals) is because the weight loss can be rather quick. The problem is that…
we need healthy carbohydrates to function. Only eating S meals and skipping the E meals will send your body into ketosis and that is not a healthy state for your body to be in long term. I know it’s really exciting to drop 5-10lbs in a single week but if it comes back then it’s more discouraging in the end. Wouldn’t you rather lose 1-2lbs steadily per week and keep it off versus losing and gaining the same few pounds over and over again?
E meals get a bad reputation but they really aren’t so bad. In fact, they’re delicious! Some of my favorites include a piece of salmon with a side of steamed veggies and a baked sweet potato, Dreamfield pasta with garlic bread made from Gwen’s bread, pizza (also made from the amazing Gwen’s bread!), a sandwich with lean meat and veggies on toasted ezekiel bread, oatmeal, trim healthy pancakes, snacking on popcorn, oatmeal chocolate chip muffins, blueberry muffins, shall I go on? Throwing a few E meals and snacks into your week isn’t so bad and it will really keep your metabolism guessing – which is what you want it to do! If your body gets into a boring old rut then it starts to wise up to your weight loss ways and refuses to release more weight.
For a solid E meal you want to have between 20-45g of carbs and 5g of fat or less. For an E snack or a light meal you can have 10-45g of carbs and 5g of fat or less. Don’t weigh yourself after having E meals the day before because the scale will likely be higher BUT that’s just water weight. Don’t panic, don’t fret, just keep up your liquid intake and enjoy the energy those healthy carbs give you.
