I know we’re in the middle of Spring, and Summer is just around the corner. And all moms know that the real beginning of the year is in September, not January. That’s when we toss out the old and welcome in the new. This year, do not strut your stuff into next school year without being prepared for it. Start now by getting your filing system in shape.
I know you don’t want to.
Don’t wait to “want to.”
If you wait to get motivated to organize your files, then you’ll be waiting around forever. What you need is ACTION. So take action this week by focusing on your filing system.
So walk on over to your files and let’s get crackin’!
First, if you don’t have any files, then you’ve got to get some NOW. The best kind to get are hanging files. These are great because nothing can slip down to the bottom of the file drawer and you can move them around easily if you need to.
Second, get all your paper junk together. All of it! Get a big, open place where you can sort it. If you have little kids, then use a higher surface like a bed. If your kids are older, then I would just hunker down and use the floor to sort everything.
Third, start sorting. There’s no way around it. You’ve got to do it. Start sorting it–sheet by sheet–into piles. Each pile will represent a category that is filed and labeled. It may seem confusing at first because you’re going to be standing there holding a bill from the pediatrician and asking yourself, “Okay, now where the heck does this go?” Here’s the scoop. Just start and things will begin taking form and making sense as you work on this sorting project. The main tip I can give you is think BROAD! Instead of making a medical file for each child, just make one pile for all family medical stuff. Instead of making a file for each utility service, like electricity, water, pest control, phone, cable, just make one big pile for all house utilities and services. Here are some categories to get you started:
Family Legal
Family Medical
House Utilities and Services
School Stuff
Financials
Okay, you got the idea? Now, let’s put it into action!
