Don’t Live In Last Year
by Meggan Larson
So it’s January 1st. Happy New Year! Did you do what I did on December 31st, 2016 and literally stuff your face with sugary desserts right up until midnight last night? Hopefully, you showed a little more self-restraint but hey if you didn’t, there’s no judgment from me. January 1st is probably my favorite day of the entire year because it’s so full of possibility and hope. There’s a reason that gym attendance skyrockets in January. Everyone is so full of determination that this is going to be the year that they lose the weight.
And it very well could be…
There is one important thing to do to start the year off right and that is ~ you need to let go of last year. Whether you were close to goal weight but didn’t quite get there or you ended even further away from it than where you started. It’s important to let the past stay in the past and move forward into 2018 with a new outlook. You have 365 days to make good choices, eat well, exercise, and stay on track. Will every day be perfect? Of course not. Don’t hold yourself to that standard. Making wiser choices on a daily basis will get you to your goal that much quicker. Forgiving yourself for not getting to where you wanted to be at the end of 2017 is key to moving forward into this year with no baggage attached. Extra baggage can account for so much extra weight and it’s not a good place to start from or get stuck in.
If I can give you one piece of solid advice it would be this: try not to think you have all the time in the world just because it’s January 1st. That train of thought has caused me to get stuck for years in the past. I was too lenient with myself and ate too many things I knew I shouldn’t because I figured I had so much time to get my act together. What actually happened was that it took me all of those months to realize that I was still off track and then I had, even more, weight to lose. It was very discouraging. I hope to spare you from that frustration by being honest with you now. Take January 1st as the gift it is and use it to propel you forward. This is your year, let’s do this!
