Do You Feel Worthless?
By Meggan Larson
How do you feel about yourself? When you’re alone in front of the mirror with no one else near you, how do you feel? Does your heart sink? Do your eyes fill with tears that threaten to spill over? Do your shoulders slump? Are you putting on a brave face every day hoping that you’ll eventually feel differently? I’ve been there mama and there’s not a diet in the world that can save you from that. Do you know why? It’s because you’re trying to change yourself from the outside in. As much as we want it to, that’s not how this works. For a lasting change, you need to work from the inside out.
One way that I’ve been doing this is…
By keeping a gratitude journal.
Honestly, it took me years to actually start filling one out. I thought the idea of writing out what I was thankful for was kind of dumb. And even more than that, I thought that writing out things I was thankful for that hadn’t even happened yet was nuts. What I’ve learned though is that if you can start to direct your thoughts by writing them down and speaking them out loud, it makes a huge difference in your life.
Has it caused me to drop 50lbs overnight?
No.
What it has done though is begin to heal my heart towards myself and I am finding myself a lot less critical of how I look. I don’t yet have the six pack I had pre-pregnancy but I am on my way. Yes, I lost 60lbs in a year about four years ago but there are reasons that it all came back. One of those reasons is because of how I really felt about myself deep down inside where only Jesus dwells. Slowly but surely He’s been changing my mind about myself and that has made a world of difference. I no longer cringe at my body’s reflection in the mirror. I used to feel worthless because of how I looked but now I am grateful for my strong legs, my creative mind, my open heart, and my persistence in the face of failure.
It’s time for you to stop seeing yourself as worthless. Start writing down the things you are grateful for about yourself. If you can’t think of any then sit there until you can. I promise you that this will begin to change your mind about yourself and in turn, will help you make better health decisions for yourself. How are you really supposed to stick to a healthy lifestyle if you hate yourself deep down? If you feel worthless than you won’t extend a helpful hand to yourself because you don’t think you deserve it. You need to change your mind about yourself because you are NOT worthless. Do whatever you have to in order to start believing that truth.
