Did You Take on Too Much?

Did You Take on Too Much?

By Meggan Larson

The summer is here and a heat advisory is already in effect for my city. (Yes, it does, in fact, get hot here in Ottawa, Canada). This week it will feel around 104*F which I’m sure I don’t have to tell you is HOT! Do you ever feel like you’ve got everything under control until you just don’t? That’s been me for the last week and a half. Everything was fine, I was finishing up homeschooling with my kids, we adopted an amazingly chill dog, and things were looking great. My husband is working full time so he’s out of the house from about 5:30 am to 7:30 pm which is great but also very hard. Still, I had everything under control.

That is until…

My mom went away for two weeks and asked me to take her puppy. Oh sure, I thought to myself, the dogs will just play together and make my life even easier. I can hear the laughter now…Do you know how much poop two dogs produce? A lot. Do you know how annoying it is to be woken up at 6 am by your mom’s howling dog? Very. Do you have any idea how infuriating it is to have to chase your mom’s dog through a field because she saw another dog and took off? Indescribably.

I have to admit it, I took on too much. I was short with my kids, the dogs, my husband, and myself. Throw in a three-day migraine and you’re ready for a full-blown meltdown sobbing in the kitchen as you stuff your face with your kids’ candy. The thing that suffered the most was my eating. I was so exhausted/frustrated/fed up that I just started eating Eggos for dinner because they were there and I was hungry.

Y’all, I hadn’t eaten an Eggo in YEARS!

When you take on too much, your health suffers. When you overcommit it makes it that much harder to stay on track because you’re barely keeping it together as it is. Learn from my experience and do NOT take on too much this summer. Just say NO if you need to for both your mental and physical health. Summer is not the time to overcommit and get totally off track health-wise. All that will do is propel you into winter feeling like you don’t care anymore so you may as well continue to eat whatever. Treat yourself better than that, please! As for me, I’ve had a lovely salad, bulletproof coffee, and I am making myself bacon and eggs for dinner because it’s easy (and so much better than Eggos). My mom gets back in a few days and I fully intend to enjoy all the free time I’ll have and the sleep I’ll catch up on without her puppy at my place.

Pray for me y’all! Only a few more days.
