How many times in the past have you vowed to get your home in order, only to realize you had no idea where to start? Do you long to stop being overwhelmed by clutter, but just thinking about tidying up makes you want to lie down and take a nap?
If this is you… dear Momma, fear not! I want to assure you that you CAN begin to climb out from under the clutter, dig out from beneath the dirt, and finally have this area of your home life under control.
I am not a major clean freak, but I do want my home to have order to it. I like to be able to locate items when I need them. I prefer not to have crumbs and crustiness caked on my kitchen counters. While we long for a clean and tidy home, what is needed first is to combat our clutter.
My family currently lives in a home that is a little over 1,200 square feet, so combatting clutter has become a regular practice for my husband and me over the past few years.
No matter how big or small your home is, keeping the clutter down makes it so much easier to keep your house clean.
This also makes it not so embarrassing if you have a surprise visitor stop by unexpected. Not like I am speaking from experience or anything… I learned a great tip from a friend of mine who always has a floor you can eat off of. I asked her one day how she manages to keep her house sparkling and her #1 tip is to have a clutter free home.
Clearing clutter for some people may be difficult especially if you like to keep everything. But realize that if you are one of those people you will have a much harder time keeping your home in order. Rule of thumb… if you haven’t used it in the last year than lose it. I am constantly asking myself that question and it feels great to clear my home from the clutter.
Make a decision today to clear the clutter and get it out. Once you make the decision get busy. Put on a CD that gets you motivated or invite a close friend over who can be there with you as you work.
Some people prefer to work alone. I personally get more done if I have someone with me just for company. If you get a friend to come over make sure you invite someone who is not emotionally attached to your stuff.
Start with your most used room in the house like your kitchen or living room and remember when you start clearing out the drawers. If you come across something your Aunt gave you and you haven’t used in the last 10 years then lose it. It’s ok to be a little ruthless if you want to enjoy a clutter free home. If your home needs reconstructive surgery make it a goal to clear one room per day and in a week’s time your home will be clutter free… it will be well worth it! I promise!
