This week we learned all about butterflies (or should I say, those creatures of the order,Lepidoptera). They are truly fascinating creatures; but was more exciting for me is how much wisdom the kids and I gleaned from these little beauties. We all know about how they start as a caterpillar, form a chrysalis, and then crawl out of these little things to embrace their new lives as butterflies.
It’s funny. If you look at a caterpillar, you would never think for a minute that it could be anything more than a little creepy, crawly worm-like thing. There may be some of you who feel like they could never be more than they are. That they are “stuck” in their life situations and can’t see any way of being anything more or greater. But then God does something amazing…
No, He doesn’t just give us wings and let us fly.
He gives us trials that help us grow our wings.
There is a HUGE difference.
When you have the desire for a greater life, when you really seek God’s will for your life and ask HIm to push you to new levels, He is faithful to do so. He cares about you and He wants you to soar through life. But first you’ve got to grow your wings.
If you have ever looked at a chrysalis, it looks just like a dead leaf, just hanging on a branch. You can’t see any life there. But then a butterfly emerges. It doesn’t happen in a moment. It happens through hours and hours of struggling.
But here’s the deal…if that butterfly never had to struggle, he would never know what it feels like to fly. The struggle strengthens his wings to be able to support himself. When God gives you struggles, it may seem tougher than ever. You may even have feelings like, “It was better when I was just a worm. I wasn’t stuck in a struggle. All I had to worry about was just getting through the day.” But God loves you and He wants the very best for you. That’s often why we have all the struggles…to strengthen us to fly.
Even when that butterfly is emerging, he probably doesn’t feel any different. But he keeps at it, bit by bit, little by little. Then all of sudden, he emerges and his wings are strong enough to help him soar through the sky! These struggles you are having right now. They are for a purpose…probably a much greater purpose than you can even imagine. I’ve always believed that God does not give us problems to match our abilities. He gives us problems to match our destinies. Are you having a tough time right now? It could very well because God is preparing you for something extraordinary. You may not feel it right now, but you could be at the very edge, getting ready to soar.
Don’t get discouraged. Think of these verses in James:
“Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing.” James 1:3-4 (Amplified Version)
That’s the key–instead of getting frustrated and angry in your struggles, face them with endurance, steadfastness, and patience. When you do this, you show strength in your character. Before you know it, God has perfected you to be able to handle the enormous blessings He has in store for you. Keep at it. You’re going to break out of that chrysalis and soar, mama!
