How do we break free from lies that have become strongholds in our lives?
When the Holy Spirit exposes a life-altering lie, one that takes root at the core of our beliefs and therefore influences everything we do and say, our counter weapon is God’s word! The lie – it’s from the devil. He’s the father of lies, and his only goal is always our destruction.
He never has anything good in store for us, even if he’s dangling something that…
…looks good before us.
Praise God, once we belong to God through Christ Jesus, we cannot be separated from His love or snatched from His hand (Romans 8:35-39). Someone give me an “Amen!” But know this: the devil will still try to destroy us and our families. Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:12, “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
In verse 10, Paul commands us to “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” and to “take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (verse 13).These are the things WE must do. In fact, verses 11 through 14, Paul says to stand or withstand four times!!! The devil isn’t going to give up without a fight, and neither can we! We must stand in truth, and continue standing in truth EVERY TIME THE DEVIL TRIES TO BRING US DOWN AGAIN.
So here’s the truth about our value and beauty:
We are fearfully and wonderfully made.
We are God’s marvelous work.
Our soul knows it very well.
He Lord sets our feet at the entrance to the narrow gate that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14), and He points us to His word: the lamp unto our feet and light unto our path (Psalm 119:105).
We must be on guard, put on the whole armor of God (see Ephesians 6:14-20), and refute Satan’s lies with His truth. Call him out every time he tries to drag us to the wide gate that leads to the broad way whose end is destruction. Bring his darkness into the light and watch the darkness flee.
After my run that day, when I found myself sinking into despair because I thought I was fat and ugly and knew it was the end of me, I declared:
I cannot be a size 4 and be fat. My body is not my God, You are, Lord, and I praise and worship You.
I did this dozens of times in an hour, a day, a week. And eventually, the truth ruled my thoughts more than the lie.
It’s what the Bible talks about in Ephesians 5:25-27, when Paul explains Christ’s love for the church: He gave Himself up for us that He might sanctify and cleanse us “with the washing of the water by the word” (verse 26). He sanctifies and cleanses us with His truth: the life giving word of God. The bread of life. So that He might present us “a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish” (verse 27).
In Romans 12:2, Paul instructs us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Because the end game is this: “We all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
When I look in the mirror, I want to behold the glory of the Lord!
What lies are you believing? Are there things you or others have told you all your life that rule your beliefs about yourself or your place in this world? It’s time to call them out of darkness and into the glorious light: God’s truth.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the exact lies. Jot them down. Alone or with a friend who knows scripture, find verses that directly refute those lies with God’s truth. Write them down on a 3×5 card or in your journal and commit them to memory. When the devil tries to remind you of the lie, declare God’s truth out loud to the enemy, so he hears it and so do you, thereby thrusting the sword of the spirit directly into the heart of his lie and killing it!
Jesus says in John 8:32: “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
I have a free gift for you today.
It’s a compilation of scriptures the beautiful, talented Jessica McCarty (www.mccartydesigns.com) made into a print you can download free here. I took it to the office supply store and had it printed on a 16×20 canvas. You are welcome to do whatever you want with it! I had one made for each of my daughters. I’ve given them as gifts to my friends.
Mine hangs just inside my closet door, where I see it when I blow dry my hair, when I choose my outfit for the day, when I put away laundry. And I read it out loud. I declare it. Because these truths, ladies, they define our beauty in the eyes of the ONE who matters:
May the Lord bless you and keep you today, make His face to shine upon you and bring you peace! Go in His truth, knowing He is transforming you for His glory!
