Balancing Your Fuels

Balancing Your Fuels

By Meggan Larson

I recently received an email from someone who is just starting out on the Trim Healthy Mama plan and I felt so badly for her. She was just so overwhelmed with it all! She didn’t know when to eat an S, E or FP meal or how often to switch them up and she was so confused by the information that she didn’t know how or where to start. I think we’ve all been there before. Confused, frozen, frustrated ~ so this is what I suggested she do…

I told her that most of us need between 5 to 8 E meals per week and when you’re first learning to do THM it’s important to just focus on S and E meals and leave the FP meals out. I suggested that she sprinkle in 5 to 8 E meals per week among her yummy S meals and do that for the first two weeks.

I find when you’re that overwhelmed it’s important to break things down for yourself in order to continue on. If you’re frozen by an overload of information then you’re more likely to stay in that place instead of moving forward. Slowly moving forward is better than standing still. The fact is that the book does recommend sticking to S and E meals in the beginning and not to worry about FP’s. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with FP meals but when you’re already insanely confused it’s better to stick to the very basics.

S = protein centered fatty meals and E = protein centered carby meals. The only numbers that really matter at this point are to keep your carbs under 10g in a fatty S meal and keep your fats under 5g in a carby E meal. You also want to keep your carbs to between 20g and 45g which is quite a bit.

It’s helpful to write yourself a little note or chart and put it on the fridge when you’re first starting out until this information becomes second nature to you (it will, I promise!). Don’t get too focused on doing everything perfectly and remember to give yourself some grace. I know you’ve heard this said before but it didn’t take a week to put on the weight so give yourself more than that to take it off.

Another fantastic resource is the Trim Healthy Mama Beginner FB page. If you haven’t joined yet go ahead and do that and ask any questions you have. The admins are there to help and have a wonderful heart to serve the THM community. And I’m available through email as well. Take your time and do your best.

You’ve got this!
