5 Steps To Creating A Life That Sucks
by Hannah Keeley
Have you ever been in the flow? You know, where things just seem to be working out for you? You’re just knee-deep in God’s blessings and seeing Him show up in miraculous way. It’s a good thing! But then there are those times when life… well, it kinda sucks. Things aren’t working out. You’re believing for a miracle and you get a mess.
You may need to check your suction.
God’s blessing operates as a vacuum. You want a life that sucks–the right way! You want a life that sucks in the blessings of God just like a vacuum! That thing you use to clean up the cookie crumbs and accidentally suck up Legos? Yep, that’s it! That sucker (literally) can teach us a lot about how God’s favor works in our lives. So, if you’re blessing vacuum isn’t working the way it should be, follow these five steps to get things back in working order.
Step One: Is It Plugged In?
Isn’t that always the first step? You can’t figure out how your appliance works, so you get out the owner’s manual and step #1 is “Make sure the device is connected to the power source.” We all have the same response: “Duh, I’m not an idiot.”
And then we plug it in…
Love is your power source. It was Jesus’ power source. It guided every decision and guarded every thought. His goal was God’s goal. In John 6:38 Jesus said, “I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.
In other words, it ain’t about you.
If you’re not getting your prayers answered and your flow seems off, you may need to check your heart. Are your motives pure? Are you operating out of love? Is your goal primarily personal gain? If so, then you’re not really connecting. You’re off your game. Even if you got what you wanted, it would still feel empty.
James 4:3 tells us that, “when you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”
Here’s the good news that is sure to make you smile–God wants to bless you. If you’re worried that your dreams aren’t going to come true if you take your eye off the prize and put in on God, then think again. God is the one who put those dreams in your heart and He is the One Who knows how to make those dreams happen in your life. He knows the shortcuts. You can try in your own power and stress yourself out, or you can hand those dreams over to God and resolve to do things His way.
According to Matthew 6:33, you need to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” That means ALL these things–including your dreams and desires.
Get connected and plug into your power source.
Step Two: Did you turn it on?
I know. I know. It seems obvious, right? But this is where most people get messed up. They beg and plead with God to give them more, but they haven’t even turned on the vacuum. A vacuum works by creating an emptiness that sucks particles in. That’s how all vacuums work. Something is emptied, then the flow starts and it pulls matter in–whether you’re talking about a Dyson or a Black Hole.
Hebrews 11:6 tells us that “without faith, it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Check it out, sister–He REWARDS those who seek Him. It’s not about you getting your blessing. It’s about you trusting that God is faithful to bless you. He loves to bless His kids. He’s a good daddy. But without faith, it is impossible to step into and live inside that blessing. Just like a vacuum can’t work until it’s turned on, the favor of God can’t work until faith activates it.
Believe it. Trust that He is a good Father. Even when it seems that nothing is happening, your faith will always get results. Trust God and flip the switch!
Step Three: Do You Need to Empty It?
How many times has this happened? You don’t know why your vacuum isn’t getting the suction you need, and then you take a look at the canister. That baby is crammed full! Of course, it can’t get any suction. It’s all filled up. The matter has to flow into empty space. That’s how it works. A vacuum works by creating an emptiness that sucks particles in. Something is emptied, then the flow starts and it pulls matter in–whether you’re talking about a Dyson or a Black Hole.
Matter can’t flow where it’s full, and neither can blessing.
And you’re the only one who can empty it out.
It’s similar to priming a pump. When you’re pumping water from a well, you’ve got to prime it. You’ve got to start the flow. If you keep pumping, eventually, a flow of water is going to come out.
How do you start the flow of blessing? Easy! Luke 6: 38 tells us exactly how: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Have you ever been too broke to tithe? Too busy to help others? Too depressed to cheer someone up? Too tired to exercise? Yep! I’ve been there and I bet you’ve been there, too. We’re standing there with a perfectly good vacuum, waiting for it to turn on and vacuum the dirt off the floor.
You’ve got the switch. Empty yourself out and let’s get this flow going! You turn it on by giving, sowing, investing. You’ve got to plant seed before you can reap a harvest. Start tithing and watch your finances increase. Help others and find your schedule begins to open up. Cheer someone up and build that joy inside you. Start exercising and watch your energy increase.
Which fills you up more–apple seeds or apples? If you want the fruit, you’ve got to let go of the seed.
Galatians 6:9 says, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” It’s a law and there is no way you can get around it. You’ve got to start the flow of blessing in your life. He gave you the power to empty it out and turn it on, so start sowing today.
Step Four: Is It Clogged Up?
Hmmm…. The vacuum just isn’t picking anything up. There’s no air flowing. The canister is empty, the power is on, so what’s happening?
You may need to check for a clogged hose. It’s called sin.
Mark 11:25 says, “whenever you stand praying, forgive if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
God wants to bless you. That’s His goal. It’s His primary mission–to get His kids back in that garden where they belong. But sin always gets in the way.
Understand this–You were forgiven from your sin that very moment you asked Jesus into your heart and made Him Lord of your life. But our tendency to wander is still there. Sin creeps in when we least expect it and suddenly things aren’t flowing like they should.
Stop. Collaborate. And listen.
God is calling you back into His favor. You need to get that sin out of your life. Confess it. Repent. And get back into the flow. Whether it’s unforgiveness, anger, worry, whatever. Anything that isn’t God’s best for you is sin. And don’t worry. God’s not judging. His mercy is always new and fresh. Open up. Let it go. And let His love fill you back up.
Step Five: Do You Need to Keep Vacuuming?
Every mom knows that vacuuming one time does not keep a house clean. You vacuum once. The carpet gets dirty. You vacuum again. The carpet gets dirty. And you vacuum again. It’s a cycle. The only clean house is an empty house. If you want a full life, then you can expect to a lot of maintenance work.
We can’t pray over something once and then just let it go. We step into that prayer and live it out. We believe it. We receive it. And we speak it every day. A clean house will go right back to being dirty if it’s not kept up. And your situation will not change unless you keep believing and confessing that it will.
In other words, do like God does. Romans 4:17 says that God “calls those things that are not as if they already are.” Do you want to get in shape? Then call yourself, “healthy.” Want to be debt-free? Then call yourself that! Start seeing yourself healed, whole, and prospering. Until you can see it, you won’t live it. Go back to step one, see with eyes of faith. It may seem impossible, but with God all things are possible.
Don’t stop your faith. Keep believing. Keep confessing. And your miracle will have to happen. It has no choice. Your vacuum is working! It will pull it in! What starts out impossible, becomes improbable, and eventually become inevitable.
God has a wonderful plan to bless you. Get the flow working and pull it right in. Just take this good advice:
“My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit—not a brute strength but a glorious inner strength—that Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God. God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.” Ephesians 3:14-20 (The Message)
