4 Types of Headaches & Relief Options

It happens! We all get headaches and they really affect our energy, attitude, and schedule. Yuck! Seasons, stress, fatigue, hormones and poor eating habits are just some of the reasons we get headaches. Are you a headache sufferer?

My family reaches for essential oils when we have headaches. They help aid circulation, lower stress levels and give relief. Painkillers (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or prescription medications) work but with a price of potential kidney and liver damage so we avoid them as much as possible.

Below are four of the major types of headaches, what triggers them and what essential oils you can use…

4 Types of Headaches & Relief Options

The Mother of All Headaches: A migraine!! This one is triggered by a number of things. It can be stress, anxiety, lack of sleep and/or hormones.

Application: Massage peppermint oil or lavender into the temples and back of your neck. Many of my friends claim the blend M-Grain by Young Living provides them relief.

Stress Headache: This sneaky type of a headache really creeps up on us. We think we are coping and then BAM a headache hits us! Most stress headaches start at the base of your skull and climb over your head above the eyes.

Application: Rub peppermint or eucalyptus oil on your temples, forehead, and wrists. Try to take 5-10 minutes closing your eyes, taking deep breaths and clearing your mind.

I Need to Eat Headache: When your diet is poor and/or erratic your body may shout at you with a headache. Eating healthy and on a regular schedule will help with this. However, when life gets in the way and you trigger one of these bad boys, essential oils are here to help (cue Superman music!) ☺

Application: Take equal parts of coconut oil, rosemary, and lavender and put them on your temples, forehead, and back of your neck.

The Pressure Headache:
Oh! Awful! When things start blooming and the pollen is everywhere it is hard to avoid this headache. Essential oils have been known to lessen the severity of the pain so be sure to keep these oils on hand.

Application: Rub eucalyptus oil or peppermint on the top of your nose, chest, and temples. Now BREATHE! Spend 5 minutes taking deep breaths as you breathe in these oils to open up your sinus passages.
